At a recent event organized to discuss Namibia’s progress, Million Habte, the Coordinator of AfCFTA Implementation at the national level, emphasized the crucial role of liberalizing markets for goods and services. “We want to promote the competitiveness of the economies of State Parties within the continent and the global market,” Habte stated. He underscored the importance of successful negotiations to achieve these goals, highlighting that the AfCFTA is not just about removing tariffs but also about addressing non-tariff barriers and creating a conducive environment for intra-African trade.

Addressing Challenges and Strengthening Integration

One of the significant challenges highlighted by Habte is the issue of multiple and overlapping memberships within regional economic communities (RECs), which has historically slowed down the pace of continental integration. Another highlight of the event was the address by Engel Nawatiseb, Namibia’s former Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology, and now the Special Envoy for the Connect Africa Trade Initiative. Nawatiseb lauded the fact that 54 member states have ratified the AfCFTA, a testament to the collective commitment to African unity and economic cooperation. However, he stressed the need for these commitments to translate into tangible actions that benefit businesses and consumers across the continent.

To this end, Nawatiseb urged producers and manufacturers to engage with the Africa Federation, a Johannesburg-based organization that has partnered with Recordi Enterprises Holdings and the Centralized SME Support Services. This partnership is particularly noteworthy as it aims to create market access for goods and services among various continental players, facilitating the flow of trade across borders and strengthening the economic ties between African nations.

Expanding Market Access Through Media

In a move to further promote the AfCFTA’s objectives, Nawatiseb announced the development of a television network dedicated to promoting goods and services under a new label designed to boost intra-African trade. This network will connect with national television channels throughout the continent, including the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA) members, ensuring wide visibility for African products and services.

This media initiative is more than just a promotional tool; it represents a strategic effort to change the narrative around African trade and production. By showcasing the diversity and quality of African goods, the television network will help build brand recognition and consumer trust, essential components for the success of the AfCFTA.
